Best Time to Move House in the UK (Months, Days, Times)
When is the cheapest, calmest, and safest time to move house in the UK? A removals company's honest answer — by month, weekday and time of day.
The short answer
If you have any choice in the matter, move on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, in the middle of the month, outside July and August, and start at 8am. That's the calmest, cheapest, lowest-risk window for a UK house move.
Best months to move in the UK
January–March and October–November are the quietest months for UK removals. Prices are lower, crews are less rushed, and you're far less likely to be competing with other households for the same crane lift in a London block.
April–June and September are mid-season — still busy, but manageable. July–August are peak: school summer holidays push family moves into the same 8-week window, and prices rise 15–30% accordingly.
Best day of the week
Friday is by far the most popular completion day in the UK because of how the property chain settles. That also makes it the most stressful — late key handovers, traffic, and a crew that's already done two moves that week.
Tuesday–Thursday completions are cheaper, calmer, and have fewer chain-collapse problems. If your solicitor and the other side will cooperate, request a mid-week completion.
Best time of day to start
Start loading at 8am, not 10am. You want the van loaded and ready to leave by the time legal completion happens around midday. The single biggest cause of stressful move days in the UK is starting too late and chasing the clock.
When NOT to book
Avoid: bank holiday weekends, the last Friday of any month, and the week between Christmas and New Year. All three combine peak demand, reduced staff and unpredictable traffic.
