UK to Switzerland Customs Clearance

Customs services only — transport and removals are not included.

In short: Customs clearance between the UK and Switzerland means making a UK export declaration when goods leave Great Britain and an import declaration to the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (FOCBS / BAZG) when they arrive, or claiming any national relief that applies.

Switzerland is not in the EU customs union. Goods from Great Britain are declared to the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (FOCBS / BAZG) under national rules, and EU reliefs do not apply there.

Dimond Movers helps private individuals and small businesses prepare the customs information for UK–Switzerland movements. We explain the paperwork and get it ready; the decisions are made by HMRC and the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (FOCBS / BAZG). Goods coming from Switzerland to the UK follow our UK import and ToR1 guides.

How a UK to Switzerland customs move usually works

  • Agree who is the exporter and who is the importer, and whether EORI numbers are needed on each side.
  • Prepare the UK export declaration so the goods have an export MRN and proof that they left Great Britain.
  • Provide any advance information the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (FOCBS / BAZG) requires before arrival.
  • Move the goods under common transit through the EU if they cross it on the way.
  • Submit the import declaration, or the relief claim for personal belongings, to the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (FOCBS / BAZG), and keep copies of everything.

Swiss points to know

  • Switzerland is outside both the EU and the EEA, so goods are imported under Swiss rules, with Swiss VAT, even after crossing the EU.
  • Swiss customs has its own declaration for household effects on moving, normally submitted with an inventory and proof of your Swiss residence.
  • Switzerland is a common transit country, so goods can travel from the EU entry point to a Swiss office under transit.

Moving your home: personal belongings

Switzerland has its own relief for household effects when you move your residence there. Conditions such as how long you owned and used the goods are set by national law and may differ from the EU rules.

New items, goods for sale, vehicles, alcohol and tobacco are often treated differently. Check the official guidance or ask us before packing.

Business and commercial goods

Goods sold to a customer in Switzerland, samples, stock and equipment are commercial goods. They need commodity codes, a commercial invoice and the documents required under the trade arrangements between the UK and Switzerland. Personal relief cannot be used for them.

Documents usually needed

  • Passport or identity document
  • Itemised, dated and signed inventory (with a translation where requested)
  • Proof of your new residence in Switzerland
  • Proof of your previous residence in the UK, such as tenancy, utility or employment records
  • UK export declaration reference (MRN) and transport details
  • For commercial goods: commercial invoice, packing list, commodity codes and EORI numbers

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Treating a move from the UK as a move within the EU — it is not, since Brexit.
  • Mixing new or business goods into a personal belongings claim.
  • Sending goods before the residence documents are in place.
  • Forgetting that a transit movement must be closed at the destination office.

Timing

Clearance times are decided by HMRC and the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (FOCBS / BAZG) and depend on the goods, the documents and any checks. We do not promise clearance or delivery times.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need customs paperwork to move from the UK to Switzerland?
Yes. Since 1 January 2021, goods leaving Great Britain for Switzerland need export formalities in the UK and import formalities in Switzerland, even for personal belongings.
Is Switzerland part of the EU customs territory?
No. Switzerland has its own customs and VAT system, so goods entering it are imported under Swiss rules and the EU relief does not apply.
Can Dimond Movers transport the goods as well?
Not through this enquiry. This service covers customs documentation only. If you also need a move, use our separate international removals enquiry.
