The Ultimate UK Moving Checklist (8 Weeks → Move Day)
Week-by-week UK moving checklist from 8 weeks out to the day itself — built by Dimond Movers LTD from thousands of real Oxfordshire house moves.
8 weeks before move day
Eight weeks out is when good UK moves get won or lost. The single most important thing to do is get fixed-price quotes from two or three local removals companies — not estimate-only enquiries. A proper company will offer a free survey (video or in person) and put the price in writing.
This is also the moment to start an inventory in your phone notes — a rough room-by-room list. You'll thank yourself in week 2.
- Book a free pre-move survey with Dimond Movers LTD or another local company
- Get 2–3 fixed-price written quotes
- Start a simple room-by-room inventory in your phone
- Check whether your new property has any parking restrictions
- Tell your landlord (if renting) and check notice requirements
6 weeks before
Now is when you start gently decluttering. Don't try to do the whole house — pick one room a weekend. Anything you haven't used in 18 months is almost certainly not worth paying a removals company to move.
Confirm your move date in writing with your removals company. If you're moving in July, August or at month-end, book now — those dates fill up fast.
- Confirm move date in writing
- Declutter one room per weekend
- Book packing service if needed
- Start using up freezer and pantry stock
4 weeks before
Change-of-address admin is boring but skipping it costs real money. Set up Royal Mail redirect online (it takes 5 minutes), and start a list of who needs your new address.
- Set up Royal Mail redirect
- Notify bank, employer, HMRC, DVLA
- Arrange home insurance for new address
- Book broadband install at the new property
- Arrange childcare/pet care for move day
2 weeks before
If you're packing yourself, start now — not the night before. Pack one box per evening and label by room, not by content. Your removals crew needs to know where it goes, not what's in it.
Confirm parking at both ends. If you need a parking suspension in central Oxford, London or any other busy area, apply now — councils often need 7–10 working days.
- Start packing non-essentials (books, off-season clothes, decor)
- Apply for parking suspensions if needed
- Confirm utility readings/handover with current and new providers
- Confirm key handover times with both estate agents
Move week & move day
Pack an 'essentials box' with kettle, mugs, tea, toilet roll, phone chargers, basic toiletries, a change of clothes and any medication. This box travels with you, not in the van.
On the day itself, your job is mostly to point and answer questions. Let the crew do their work — a good UK removals team will protect your floors, wrap your furniture and update you constantly.
- Pack an essentials box that travels with you
- Take final meter readings with photos
- Walk through the empty property with the crew lead before they leave
- At the new property, check items off as they come in
