Piano Movers in Edinburgh — Upright, Baby Grand & Grand

Specialist piano moving across Edinburgh — uprights, baby grands and full concert grands handled with proper piano boards, skates, straps and a trained 3-4-person crew. Edinburgh's UNESCO New Town, Old Town closes and Georgian terraces are some of the trickiest UK moves for access — narrow entryways, cobbled streets and shared stairs are the norm.

Our Process

The Dimond Movers Moving Process

Step 1

Tell us about your Edinburgh job — property size, distance and any access notes.

Step 2

Free Survey

A coordinator confirms the inventory, access and any special items by video or in person.

Step 3

Fixed Written Quote

Fixed all-in price for the Edinburgh job — no weekend surcharges or hidden add-ons.

Step 4

Move Day

A uniformed, fully-insured crew arrives on time and finishes the job to a calm, premium standard.

Every piano type — upright to concert grand

Upright pianos are our most common Edinburgh piano job — most fit through standard doorways with proper skates and straps, though stairs and narrow hallways always need pre-survey.

Baby grands and full grands are dismantled for transport (legs, lyre, pedal box removed) and reassembled at the destination. Concert grands take a 4-person crew as standard.

Access planning for Edinburgh pianos

City of Edinburgh Council parking dispensations take 10 working days and are essential for New Town and Old Town moves. We check every doorway, staircase and turn before quoting a Edinburgh piano job — external furniture hoists are used where the internal route can't take the instrument safely.

Most pianos travel strapped and blanket-wrapped inside a Luton with padded floor. Long journeys are secured with corner-boards and moved at reduced motorway speeds where needed.

Insurance and tuning after the move

Every Edinburgh piano move is covered by full Goods in Transit insurance. We recommend re-tuning 2-4 weeks after the move once the instrument has settled into the new environment.

We work regularly with piano tuners across Scotland — happy to recommend a local tuner if you don't already have one.

Edinburgh piano moves are a stairwell problem, not a weight problem

An upright piano weighs 200-300kg and a concert grand can pass 500kg, but weight is rarely what stops an Edinburgh piano move. The stairwell does. Marchmont and Bruntsfield tenements have four or five flights with tight half-landing turns; New Town flats have grand proportions inside and a single narrow common stair; Old Town closes rule out anything larger than a transit at the door.

So we survey the route, not just the instrument: narrowest turn, door swing, ceiling height above the stairs, handrail projections and where the vehicle can legally stand. That determines crew size, whether skates and a piano board are enough, or whether a hoist or crane lift through a window is the honest answer.

Grands are dismantled properly - lyre and pedal assembly off, legs off, body on its side on a padded board - never wheeled on their own castors. That is where most instrument damage happens, and it is entirely avoidable.

Questions From Real Searches

Answers to the questions people ask

How much do piano movers cost in Edinburgh?
An upright with level access starts around GBP 260. Tenement stair work is typically GBP 340-GBP 520 depending on flights and turns. A baby grand is GBP 480-GBP 780 and a concert grand from GBP 950. Every job gets a fixed written price before we book.
Can you move a piano up Edinburgh tenement stairs?
Yes - it is most of what we do in Edinburgh. Stone tenement stairs are strong but the half-landing turns are tight, so we measure the narrowest turn and the door swing first and bring the crew size that job actually needs.
What if the piano will not fit through the stairwell?
Then it goes through a window. We arrange a hoist or crane lift, including street permits for New Town and Old Town addresses, and price it as a line item so there is no moving-day renegotiation.
Do you move pianos between Edinburgh and Glasgow or England?
Yes. Edinburgh to Glasgow, Aberdeen, Dundee and the Borders are routine, as are long-distance runs to London, Manchester and Oxford on a dedicated or shared piano load.
Will my piano need retuning after the move?
Almost always. Any move changes string tension and the new room's humidity differs from the old one. Leave the piano to settle two to three weeks, then have it tuned.
Is my piano insured while being moved?
Yes. Goods in Transit and Public Liability cover applies as standard, with increased cover available for high-value or heritage instruments on request.
