Piano moving across Oxfordshire a specialist service, county wide

From the spires of Oxford to Henley, Thame, Didcot, Witney and Burford, Oxfordshire piano moves cover every property type imaginable.

Our Oxfordshire piano crews handle everything from a teaching upright in a town centre flat to a Steinway grand in a country house on a single track lane. The standard is the same: padded covers, careful loading, secure transit and unhurried placement at the new property.

Difficult access piano moves

Many Oxfordshire piano moves involve tight Victorian staircases, narrow Edwardian hallways or first floor flats with no lift. Where the piano cannot go safely up or down a staircase, we deploy a specialist external piano lift through a window or balcony.

Our coordinator spots difficult access at the survey stage and prices the lift into the fixed quote no surprises on the day.

What makes a Oxfordshire piano move different

Oxfordshire covers two very different piano jobs. In Oxford, Didcot, Abingdon and Banbury it is terraces, flats and schools with narrow doors and turning stairs. In the villages between Thame, Burford, Woodstock and Henley it is period cottages with low beams, flagstone floors and long gravel approaches - which is where boards, runners and an extra pair of hands matter far more than raw strength.

We are based in Oxfordshire, so a county piano move is a local job for us: no travel loading in the price, and we can usually survey by photo the same day and move within the week.

Cottage doorways are the single most common Oxfordshire surprise. A 1700s cottage door can be under 700mm wide, which rules out some uprights entirely through the front and makes the rear or patio door the real route. We establish that from your photos before you commit to a date.

A piano move is decided by the route, not the instrument. We walk the full path first - vehicle position, threshold, hallway width, staircase turns, floor surface - and size the crew to the hardest point on that route. That is why our quotes sometimes send more people than a cheaper quote, and why the instrument arrives without a mark on the case.

Every job travels on a dedicated vehicle with fixed strapping points, upright and restrained, with covers on the case and runners on your floors at both ends. Nothing goes on a shared load between wardrobes.

Piano move checklist

  • Tell us the make, model and length (grands are measured lid-closed, tail to keyboard)
  • Send photos of the piano and of every doorway, staircase and turn on the route
  • Measure the narrowest doorway and any tight landing turn
  • Clear the route: rugs, banister obstructions, low fittings, parked cars
  • Flag stone steps, gravel drives and any threshold lip at either address
  • Confirm where the piano will sit - away from radiators, direct sun and external doors
  • Book tuning 2-3 weeks after delivery, not the same day
  • Ask us about long-term climate: pianos hate rapid humidity swings more than travel
Questions From Real Searches

Answers to the questions people ask

How much does it cost to move a piano in Oxfordshire?
An upright piano moved locally in Oxfordshire typically costs £180-£320, rising to £280-£480 where a turning staircase is involved. A baby grand is usually £380-£650 and a full grand £550-£1,200 depending on size, access and crew. Room-to-room moves within one property start at £120. You get a fixed written price before we book the date.
Do you move grand pianos, not just uprights?
Yes. Grands and baby grands are stripped down properly - lyre and pedals off, legs removed one at a time as the body is supported onto a padded skid - then rebuilt and levelled at the delivery address. We do not tip a grand on its side onto a sack truck, which is the usual cause of case and action damage.
Is my piano insured while you move it?
Yes. Piano moves are covered under our goods-in-transit and public liability insurance, and you declare the instrument's replacement or valuation figure at booking so the cover matches it. For antique, restored or concert instruments tell us the valuation and we confirm cover in writing.
What equipment do you use?
Piano boards and upright trolleys, skates, padded covers and blankets, ratchet strapping with soft protectors, floor runners and stair-climbing aids where needed. The vehicle has fixed strapping points so the instrument travels upright and restrained rather than wedged between furniture.
What if the piano cannot fit through the door or stairwell?
We establish that at survey, not on the day. Where a grand genuinely cannot come down a stairwell we quote a hoist or, occasionally, temporary removal of a window or door frame by a joiner. It is uncommon - but discovering it on moving day is what turns a £400 job into a cancelled one.
Will my piano need tuning after the move?
Almost certainly, but not immediately. Let the instrument settle in its new room for two to three weeks so it stabilises to the local temperature and humidity, then tune it. Tuning the day after delivery usually means paying twice.
Do you move pianos to and from storage?
Yes. We store pianos in insured containers with covers and elevated boarding, kept off cold concrete, and we advise against long-term storage in unheated garages - humidity swings do more harm to soundboards and tuning stability than the journey ever does.
How far ahead should I book a Oxfordshire piano move?
A week or two is usually enough for a local upright. Grands, hoists and long-distance dedicated runs want three to four weeks because they need the right crew size and vehicle on the same day. We survey by photo or video for most jobs, so quoting is quick.
